Subject: EPD Newsletter #19

Hello EPD-ers!

After a frigid weekend, the above-freezing temperatures of the coming week almost seem balmy. However, don't shed those winter coats just yet! Stay warm, make sure you utilize the
free campus shuttle or Via ride-share if these services are able to drop you closer to your home and reduce your time out in the cold. And definitely don't do what one of our EPD PAs did and bike 20 blocks in sub-zero temperatures (only to have to take the subway eventually because their fingers may have lost feeling rather quickly).

We also wanted to give you all a head's up about four EPD career panels (on Financial Inclusion & FinTech, M&E, ESG & Sustainable Investment, and Gender) that will take place in 3 weeks' time. We are looking for two students to moderate the panel on M&E (Tuesday, February 28, 2023) and ESG & Sustainable Investment (Thursday, March 2, 2023). Both panels will take place from 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM over Zoom. If you are interested and want more details, please email Ilona VinklerovaThis is a great opportunity to network with the moderators and learn more about these career tracks.

This week’s newsletter includes:

  • Upcoming EPD Events
  • Other Events
  • Career Advancement Center Events
  • Jobs, Internships and Other Opportunities
  • NYC Beyond SIPA

Ha-Joon Chang Book Talk

Time: 5:30 - 6:30 PM
Location: IAB 1512

Ha-Joon Chang will talk about his new book, Edible Economics: A Hungry Economist Explains the World. According a Guardian review, he uses brief meditations on the history of trade or flavour of different foodstuffs to illustrate economic truths. If there is a single message in the book, it is that you should run a mile from any politician preaching a single narrow economic faith. Chang looks at economic theory as a buffet rather than a set menu; and believes fusion always creates better flavour than monoculture.

Our core research focuses on gender as it relates to labor economics and broader economic empowerment; political economy and governance; and environmental economics. We also aim to build a culture of evidence and increase data literacy in the public sector, strengthening leaders’ ability to identify and implement evidence-informed policies. Throughout the research life cycle, we engage closely with policy counterparts to ensure we address questions of immediate relevance, and we regularly communicate data-driven insights with policy counterparts and the general public.
