Lighting the Way: Women as Agents of Change in Energy Access
When: Thursday, November 16th | 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Where: IAB 1512

Energy poverty is a major challenge around the world, with over 700 million people lacking access to electricity. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by energy poverty, as they are often responsible for collecting and using biomass fuels for cooking and heating. This can lead to a number of health and safety risks, as well as time constraints that limit their ability to pursue education and employment opportunities.
This panel discussion will bring together experts from the public and private sectors to discuss the challenges and opportunities of addressing energy poverty and gender inequality. Panelists will explore the role of women and girls as agents of change in the energy access sector, and discuss how governments, businesses, and civil society organizations can support their efforts.
Panelists:
- Mercedes de la Vega, Energy Partnerships Manager at Acumen
- Philippe Benoit, Adjunct Senior Research Scholar at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University SIPA
- Dr. Destenie Nock, Assistant Professor in Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE), and Engineering and Public Policy (EPP) at Columbia University
- Moderated by Professor Eugenia McGill, Co-Director of the Economic and Political Development Concentration at SIPA
