Hello EPD-ers!

Fall has officially begun and so has the mountain of assignments. However, don't forget the plethora of events taking place this week, and ensure you take the time out to attend the ones that are interesting to you. If you're a first year (or even a continuing student, for that matter), one event to look out for is the SIPAFest! All registered clubs will be tabling this Thursday on Revson Plaza from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. This is one event you don't want to miss out.

Speaking of missing out, we have recently learned that on occasion CampusGroups will cut off half the newsletter when it reaches your mailboxes. Don't forget to click the "View Entire Message" link at the bottom, if the newsletter appears clipped.

This week’s newsletter includes:

  • EPD Events
  • Other Events
  • Career Advancement Center Events
  • Important Deadlines
  • NYC Beyond SIPA
  • EPD Office Hours

Information has fundamentally reshaped development discourse and practice. In this study, Dr. Janaki Srinivasan examines the history of the idea of “information” and its political implications for poverty alleviation. She presents three cases in India—the circulation of price information in a fish market in Kerala, government information in information kiosks operated by a nonprofit in Puducherry, and a political campaign demanding a right to information in Rajasthan—to explore three cases of information to support goals of social change. Countering claims that information is naturally and universally empowering, Srinivasan shows how the definition, production, and leveraging of information are shaped by caste, class, and gender.

Political, Economic and International Consequences of the 2022 Italian Elections
When:
Wednesday, September 28, 2022
Time: 4:10 - 5:10 PM
Location: IAB 404

Elections took place on September 25 in the 3rd-largest EU economy, potentially having consequences far beyond its borders. With infamously unstable political leadership, a fragile economy, high government debt, and unemployment, another unclear outcome could lead to mayhem in Europe. In another scenario, a clear mandate for the right-wing coalition would mean a huge boost for the non-traditional, EU-critical right-wing parties.

These all prove the importance of the Italian elections, and as a result, CEUSA will host a talk with Professor Carlo Invernizzi Accetti, an expert on European politics to better understand the potential consequences of this important political event.
