Andrew Wellington Cordier Prize by the Journal of International Affairs
The Journal of International Affairs invites students of Columbia University to contribute an essay of 2,000-4,000 words for publication in the forthcoming print issue. The winner will receive a prize of $500 and a complimentary copy of the issue. The winning piece will be
featured both in the print version and on JIA’s website.

Papers should explore the causes of fragilities within the state, global systems, and
society, and their long-lasting effects. Special attention will be placed on COVID-19 and its reverberating effects on global systems. Given the concept’s broad scope, the journal seeks drafts that explore discrete sub-topics as described here:

  • COVID-19 and how it exposes the fragilities of systems, states, societies, and state-society relations;
  • Climate change, Energy, and climate justice;
  • The international governance crisis and its root causes;
  • Multilateralism and diplomacy in polarized and insecure systems;
  • Polarity and great-power politics in international relations;
  • Technology and its effects, including misinformation, disinformation, and cyberwarfare, on compounding fragilities that impact international affairs;
  • Authoritarianism, nationalism, and populism in the twenty-first century and its effects on the international system and responses to international crises;
  • Refugees and forced displacement, especially in the context of climate change;
  • An analysis on the future of borders; and
  • Sources of resiliency, strength, and adaptation for addressing the challenges that lie ahead.
Submission Guidelines: JIA publishes original, unpublished work. Conference papers or discussion papers that have not previously appeared in print are welcomed. JIA follows Chicago style, and its citation format is an adaptation of Chicago’s Notes and Bibliography system. Please email your draft to JIAprint@columbia.edu with “JIA Cordier Prize” in the subject line.

NYC BEYOND SIPA

Winter Village at Bryant Park

Bryant Park's Winter Village by Bank of America is back in NYC with holiday festivities and shopping and food at its holiday shops.

Its 17,000-square-foot ice-skating rink that's free to use (if you bring your own skates) is always the highlight, but its Winter Village in all its holiday spirit is a close second. This year, over 170 new and returning kiosks will be there for you to peruse through—all at one of the best NYC parks. It'll also bring back its Small Business Spotlight that gives four New York City-based minority-owned small businesses, with annual revenues of $1 million or less, an opportunity to showcase their products in a free booth at the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park.

You'll also be able to cozy up at The Lodge: a covered, outdoor après-themed area where visitors can grab a festive cocktail, enjoy delicious food, watch the ice skaters or admire the tree.
