Dear EPD-ers,

We hope you are all taking care of yourself despite the daily deadlines and academic commitments. A much needed Thanksgiving break is almost here and we cannot wait to spend it with our friends and family, and have some fun before heading back to the last leg of the semester while also catching up on much needed sleep!

Speaking of fun, to say that our EPD retreat on Saturday was fun would be an understatement. From the bus ride to the retreat center, tea/coffee breaks, indoor and outdoor activities, lovely weather and great food, everyone had a great time. The walk in the woods and hang-out by the lake in the crisp fall sunlight brought everyone together and by the time we played charades, we were happy to witness that everyone had bonded over, and was ready for a ruthless competition.

Participants of the retreat can access the pictures taken through this shared Google Drive folder. We also strongly encourage you to upload any pictures you took to this folder so that everyone can access them.

  • New Perspectives on a Changing Climate: Young Voices in Nuclear Energy

When: Tuesday, 28 November 2023 | 6-7:30 pm

Where: Faculty House - Presidential Ballroom

Nuclear energy can be an important tool for addressing global climate change. According to the International Energy Agency, achieving global emissions reduction goals will require nearly doubling, between 2020 and 2050, electricity produced from nuclear reactors. As momentum grows for meaningful climate action, nuclear energy in some corners is experiencing a resurgence of interest.

But trust and confidence in nuclear energy remains low in many sectors, and younger generations and people of color, many of whom are driving the conversation on climate action and climate justice, have questions about nuclear energy. Historical injustices tied to the nuclear sector and open questions on cost, timeliness, and safety loom large.

Please join the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia SIPA and Good Energy Collective for a moderated, in-depth discussion and Q&A addressing these issues. This panel elevates young and diverse voices at the intersection of nuclear energy and climate, addressing the role of the youth voice in global fora, and explores the shifting landscape of nuclear policy and opinion.

Moderator:

  • Daniel Propp, Senior Special Assistant to the Founding Director, Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia SIPA

Speakers:

  • Kelsy Green, Graduate Student Intern, Los Alamos National Laboratory
  • Victor Ibarra Jr., Nuclear Innovation Analyst, Nuclear Innovation Alliance
  • Cleo Schroer, Senior Policy Analyst, Good Energy Collective

Recommendation of the Week

  • Reflections of My Nonexistence - Rebecca Solnit

Memoir by one of the greatest feminists of the twenty-first century, Recollections of My Nonexistence, describes her formation as a writer and as a feminist in 1980s San Francisco, in an atmosphere of gender violence on the street and throughout society and the exclusion of women from cultural arenas. Against a backdrop of pervasive gender violence in both public spaces and society at large, as well as the marginalization of women in cultural spheres, she recounts her experiences of poverty, optimism, and a sense of aimlessness in the city that served as her profound teacher. At the age of nineteen, she found transformation in a modest apartment, and it was there that she forged a new identity for herself. The narrative unfolds to reveal how punk rock became the vehicle for expressing her own anger and vibrant energy.

The memoir  talks about the transformative forces that shaped her as an individual and as a writer such as the influence of books, the perspectives on gender, family, and joy presented by the gay men in her circle, and her eventual immersion in the expansive landscapes and often-overlooked conflicts of the American West.

These diverse influences not only guided her writing style but also bestowed upon her a resonant voice that has inspired and empowered many others. The author of Men Explain Things to Me, Solnit is bold, unapologetic and audacious and you would love it if you are into feminist non-fiction.-
